The Beginning

First time blogger here, never thought I would call myself a "BLOGGER". LOL
Lets all start talking about the Elliott Family. I know that DNA is the big thing in genealogy today
and after spending the afternoon with a many times removed cousin, Bob, he has shown me things that
got me excited. Bob will be joining the blog here and I will let him explain this wonderful chart that he and his wife Janet
have put together. Just let me say that I have a lot to learn about DNA, but Bob's chart sure makes it easier to wrap my head around.
So lets start this discussion on our known ancestor Daniel Elliott, who was born in Massachusetts about 1665. We know his father was also Daniel Elliott, but we don't know for certain how he got to America but we sure do know he arrived.
There is much research left to be done on this family line. We do know that Daniel married Hannah Cloyce, and that they had 5 sons who all  grew to manhood and married and had children, and we are the product of that union.
I would anyone who is interested in this family line to weigh in, and share information as I have a lot of documents
and information on my Elliott family.

  2. Daniel's sons names are; Daniel, Ebeneezer, Johnathan, John, Peter, Nathaniel. John, Peter and Nathaniel are sons of Hannah's grandfather seaman John Cloyse. Peter is Hannah's father. Johnathan is another form of John, but haven't be able to place the name Ebeneezer. After the marriage to Hannah Daniel and family migrated on with Peter and Sarah Cloyse's extended family.

  3. Daniel's sons names were; Daniel, Ebeneezer, Johnathan, John, Peter, Nathaniel. John, Peter and Nathaniel are names of seaman's John Cloyses sons by his first wife. Peter being the father-in-law to Daniel. Johnathan, is a combo name of John and Nathan, or JohnNathan haven't figured out where the name Ebeneezer came from though.

  4. Melanie & I had barely finished discussing this blog idea and presto! …there it is! Talk about taking the "Bull by the Horns"! Hopefully this blog will help us all pool our ideas and resources so that we can document this story to the many descendents of Daniel who have not yet heard it.

Now, if I can just figure out how to post.....??

  5. How I learned about Daniel for the First Time:

I was first bitten by the Elliott Family History bug when I was only about 12 years old my aunt Violet allowed me to read the journal of my GG grandfather George Washington Elliot who was born in Onondaga Co. NY in 1830.

Up until about 2 years ago, my knowledge of my surname’s history began no further back then when George W. Elliot married Jane E. McKevett on July 4th 1853.
About 12 years ago now I posted a query on the Ancestry.com Elliot forum asking for any info about George W. & Jane's ancestry. I eagerly awaited a reply but none came. After 6-8 months I just forgot about it. Then a couple of years ago, I did another Google search for George W. Elliot and it came up with my own old Ancestry.com query. I'll be darned if after a decade of nothing, I had finally just received two replies just a month or so before.
One of those who replied, Walt Smucker, turned out to be a cousin descended from George W's youngest son while I was descended from his oldest. Walt said something vague about Daniel of Salem and suggested I contact J.C. Elliott who absolutely buried me in info suggesting that I was descended from a Daniel Elliot who was involved in the Salem Witch Trials. I found this pretty exciting but despite all J.C's info still nothing specifically connected my GG grandfather George W. with Daniel. I seemed to be at a stand-still and so I decided to finally join Jim V's Border Reiver Project (which I'd known about for some time) and I had my YDNA tested to 67 markers with FTDNA. When the results came back I found out to my surprise that I closely matched several other Elliott's including an exact 67 marker match with Capt. Tom Elliott. I also was off by only 1 in 67 markers with Pete Horton.

So then I contacted Capt Tom and we had a nice visit after which he suggested I contact Linda Elliott who assured me J.C. was an exceptional researcher who's info I could trust. Linda also had a wealth of insights and info to share but she could still not really connect my George W. to Daniel of Salem. She suggested that I contact Janice Hoy who knew what Linda suspected was my branch of the family much better then Linda did. Janice was finally able to fill in the blanks and suddenly I had a unbroken lineage back to about 1651! As it turned out Janice & I had a common ancestor in Jonathan, George W’s grandfather.

Linda often referred to things she and “Melanie” had researched or learned. I wasn’t sure who this Melanie was but one day I asked if “Melanie” was perhaps the “Melanie” I had seen posting in various places online? Linda confirmed that they were one in the same person. One day Linda asked me what part of the world I lived in and I told her. You can imagine both our surprises when Linda found out both Melanie and I shared the same zip code!
It wasn’t long before Melanie & I met. I also became acquainted with the exceptional work of Mark Elliott, Dee Wakefield-Elliott and others.

Over these last 2 years I have become fairly well acquainted with this group of excellent researchers all descended from Daniel who have been following the paper trial for I guess two or three decades now. There may be an “i” to dot or a “t” to cross here and there but it appears to me that a fairly complete picture of the “Daniel” lineage in America from the 1650’s has been assembled. Bob
